Some Thoughts on Mundi's Farewell

by Darrel Mayers

Fifteen years ago I started Mundi after visiting a garden-shed-type record shop called Immortal Performances here in Austin. Among the racks I struck gold when I picked up an album with soaring renditions of medieval Cantigas of Alfonse El Sabio. . .   and thus the Mundi Ensemble began. Since then the project blossomed beyond my wildest dreams.

We recorded four albums and visited Spain three times. Here in Austin, we performed with poets Robert Bly and Coleman Barks, and with Conspirare's Craig Hella Johnson, and soprano Jenifer Thyssen, hosted CD release parties at the original Barr Mansion, and forged a host of friendships with our amigos overseas.

We've had an amazing journey, but when 2015 arrived, it surprised me by bringing with it a sense that Mundi's career had run its course - and that it was time for all of us to embark on fresh adventures. Most of the musicians agreed.

Over our years together, although we've have some high profile exposure on national radio, it still feels like we have almost been a secret, supported entirely by you - our fans and and aficionados. You cheered us at our concerts, you helped send us on our tours of Spain, and we extend our deepest thanks to you for making our experience possible.

Please join us one last time, on October 4th, along with special guests Carolyn Hagler (cello), Susan Boulden (harmonium)  and Don Weeda (accordion.)

This event is going to be a celebration of our incredible 15 years together, and also will mark the release of our new compilation CD: Finisterre: a Celebration of Mundi. Truthfully it will also have some notes of sadness. I'm certainly going to miss all the friendships within the Mundi circle and the tunes themselves have become like friends over time. Thank you so much. I hope to see all of you at the
